Common Talks Kendrick Lamar-Drake Feud And Whether Rappers “Went Too Far”

Common has thoughts about the great rap war between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. During an interview with 7PM in Brooklyn, Com Sense asked whether Kendrick and Drizzy went too far in their feud

He explained that there weren’t too many rules when it comes to war except for leaving deceased and terminally ill people out of the bout. However, he opined that the battle between the two heavyweights was “incredible” and didn’t think they went too far with their subject matter. While he stated that he wouldn’t go after family members, he admitted that he dabbled in that subject during his feud with Drizzy. The Chicago emcee also broke down the battle criteria at Carmelo Anthony‘s request.

“In a battle, first of all, I think the criteria is that you’ve got to have lyrics… Saying something that’s like, ‘Man, I’m lighting this ni**a up.’ The lyricism is there. It’s got to be lines that punch, they punch, like you’ve got to hit. And I like wordplay with that, too… But, if what you’re saying is just clever and it’s got punch, to me that’s part of it… For me, I wasn’t like, ‘This is too far.’ I just was like, ‘Damn, this is a really incredible battle.’”

Elsewhere, Lil Yachty also weighed in on the battle and addressed Kendrick bringing up his name “Euphoria.” While Yachty has historically described Drake as his “best friend,” he insisted that he “loves” both rappers. He also asserted that he wanted to stay out of the battle. “So many people kept calling me with excitement for my name being used,” he began. “I didn’t want anything to do with it. I got a ton of respect for BOTH of these guys… I [already] knew my name was mentioned before it came out, I had gotten word.”

As for the back and forth, the battle has died down. Drizzy was the last rapper to drop a song in “The Heart Part 6,” where he arguably sounded defeated. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” released a day before that song, managed to overpower his track and even reach No. 1 on the Billboard 100. Drizzy then followed up with an Instagram Story, seemingly bowing out of the bout. He also used that time to declare that “summer vibes” were coming.
