Cap Or Fact? Juvenile Claims ‘400 Degreez’ Sold More Than Jay-Z And Nas’ Best Albums

The Juvenile has long maintained his stance that Southern rappers’ stats can go toe-to-toe with some of New York City’s Hip-Hop elite, and his latest claim echoes this sentiment. Juvie appeared on the HoodClips podcast, where he opened up about his third studio album, 400 Degreez, and whether or not it has “no skips.”

The show’s host recalled talking to a couple of his friends about the debate to which they contested his assertion that 400 Degreez is a classic. Juvenile then spoke about the bias that tends to be in favor of NYC artists who “have their own definition of what they call Hip-Hop” and declared that a “hit is a hit, you don’t have to be the best rapper.”

“The best rapper in the world don’t mean nothing if you don’t got f**king hits,” he said. “Go check the numbers, ni**as always talking about NasJay-Z…okay, who sold the most records? Let’s see who sold the most records on each solo album. Pick your best Nas album [and] your best Jay-Z album and I’ma take 400 and you tell me who sold the most on a solo album…Numbers don’t lie.”

No, no, they don’t Juve the Great. So, let us entertain Juvenile’s bold proclamation and base our perception of the best emcee or illest rapper on trackable data, shall we? According to the RIAA, the official scorekeeper of all things plastic, gold, platinum, and diamond album sales, Juvie’s claims do have some teeth. When comparing 400 Degreez to Nas’ highest-selling album, It Was Written, Juve takes the cake, selling 4 million to the latter’s 3 million, as of August 2024. As for Hov, well, the tape tells a different story.

Jay-Z has multiple albums that have sold 4 million and more. The Black Album ties 400 Degreez at 4 million units sold, while Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life has sold 6 million copies and Watch the Throne has moved 5 million–but that LP doesn’t count because Juvenile specially requested solo works. Either way, Jay-Z has sold more than both Nas and Juvenile. By the Cash Money artist’s logic, Hov takes the cake here.

So, is it cap or fact? Well, it’s 50/50 as he has sold more than Nas, but he hasn’t outsold Hov.
