Tony Effe is just the latest in a long list of rappers kicked out of a New Year’s Eve concert
The news is this: the municipality of Rome and its mayor have been strongly criticized by politicians of various parties and by feminist associations for having sent Tony Effe to perform at the New Year’s concert at the Circus Maximus. The reason? The usual texts deemed misogynistic, violent, which incite violence against women, which are sexist and “in open contradiction with the laborious attempt to affirm a culture of respect and equality”.
In short, nothing new under the sun.
Before Tony Effe there were Sfera Ebbasta, Guè, Fabri Fibra, Emis Killa, Niky Savage… the list is quite long, but the result is always the same, as is the process. They invite a rapper to a New Year’s concert in the square or to the big concert on May 1st, the feminist associations and the politicians of the moment rise up, they start saying “it has violent, sexist, homophobic lyrics and blah blah blah” and how does it end? The rapper on duty is asked not to show up.
Just like what happened to Tony Effe.
The municipality of Rome changed its mind and “kindly” asked him not to participate in the event anymore, “which must not be a divisive occasion for the city”.
It doesn’t matter that Tony Effe wrote in his IG stories “I RESPECT AND LOVE ALL WOMEN AND I’M SORRY THAT SOMEONE STILL THINKS THE CONTRARY”, he remains the bad guy. Why do people not even understand the lyrics, don’t make the effort to understand the musical genre, and why should they? Lots of rap equals incitement to violence of various kinds so as not to make mistakes and to the use of drugs. But I wonder, and I’ve been wondering for years: why do they invite them to such concerts if they then have to massacre them? I don’t even ask myself why they don’t understand the lyrics and the context, because it’s useless, but it’s the same story as always and always. They call the rapper of the moment to fill the square and then comes the controversy, which is always the same for everyone and finally they kick him out as if he were the last of the assholes. And you know what? They broke the balls.
