Magic City Mafia Give Underground Rap New Life with 'My Bittersweet Gospel'

Magic City Mafia ‘s Mason Quest (MCM Malice) and Takoda Guzman (MCM Koda) have been making waves with their new EP, My Bittersweet Gospel. Gone is the dark side of gang life that filled their earlier work. Instead, My Bittersweet Gospel is a more nuanced exploration of strength, vulnerability, and community.

The EP’s three tracks “Ru Still Here?!”, “Searching for Your Eyes,” and “Magic City” have a very personal narrative. The first single, “Ru Still Here?!”, is a song about perseverance and faith in the most trying of times.

“Searching for Your Eyes” is perhaps the emotional core of the EP, with its melancholy production and lyrics that reveal a new facet of Magic City Mafia that listeners may not have heard before. The final track, “Magic City,” is a victorious anthem of community and bonding.

The vulnerability and the strength of My Bittersweet Gospel are what render it so exceptional. Whereas their last album had been grounded on the harsh realities of life on the streets, this EP widens their narrative to include the common feelings of love, loss, and hope.

Following in the footsteps of hip-hop legends like 2Pac and N.W.A., Magic City Mafia blends tough realities with self-reflection, turning personal struggle into music that resonates deeply with listeners. Both Takoda and Mason have fought against difficult issues like addiction and violence, but they turn those experiences into music that feels real and relatable.
