SZA Reveals Why She Had Her Breast Implants Removed

SZA revealed she removed her breast implants to avoid getting breast cancer. During an interview with the S.H.E. MD podcast, the TDE songstress opened up about her family’s medical history.

She explained that breast cancer runs in her family, with her mother contracting the disease. SZA also detailed how her aunt had undergone a mastectomy and how these revelations influenced her decision. The musician explained that she “has a 53% lifetime risk” of developing breast cancer due to her family history. The singer then stated that getting breast implants led to her suffering from fibrosis.

According to the National Institutes of Health, fibrosis is defined by “the overgrowth, hardening, and/or scarring of various tissues and is attributed to excess deposition of extracellular matrix components including collagen.”

“When I got my boobs done, my doctor took out some of my fibrosis, but.. there was so much fibrosis, it was crazy,’” she recalled. “And he took it out. And so, when I went back, a lot of the concerns were gone.”

“I like seeing somebody spiritual about it, specifically the breast cancer situation and the marker before I had the results of the biopsy and all that, I had talked to somebody, because I was like, I got to figure out what’s going on in the higher realms.”

The 34-year-old singer also detailed how she wasn’t supposed to be getting implants due to her family’s history, but she disregarded the advice and sought breast implants anyway. However, she stated that they “ended up hurting me.”

“I have markers in my breast, like metal markers in my breast for these fibrosis, for these lumps or whatever, I’m not supposed to be getting breast implants,” she said. “So basically, I put them in. They ended up hurting me. I have way too much scar tissue because my breasts are too dense, and I’m not supposed to have breast implants. And so I ended up getting extra fibrosis like with tissue, whatever, and I didn’t feel good and it was painful. So, I took them out, and now, they’re just my boobs.”

The St. Louis native also previously opened up about getting a BBL. In a 2023 interview with Elle, the SOS artist spoke about getting the high-risk surgery done. She stated that the decision was all “hers alone.”

“I treat my butt like a purse. It’s just there to enhance whatever else. And that’s why I paid for it: it works all by itself. I always wanted a really fat a** with less gym time. I didn’t succumb to industry pressure. I succumbed to my own eyes in the mirror and being like, ‘No, I need some more a**.’”
