Rihanna Says Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl Halftime Show Is “Meant To Be”
Rihanna‘s “LOYALTY” to Kendrick Lamar runs deeper than their 2017 collaboration from his acclaimed album DAMN. In a new interview, the singer shared her opinion on K. Dot being selected as the headlining performer for the upcoming Super Bowl LIX halftime show.
“It’s a diamond on a ring finger, honey. It’s meant to be!” exclaimed the 36-year-old to Entertainment Tonight‘s Kevin Frazier.
She continued, “It’s Kendrick Lamar! Kendrick Lamar is the one that’s supposed to do it right now. He’s gonna crush it. We should never doubt him. He’s an amazing artist, top-tier. He had an incredible year. He actually brought so many people together. It’s to be celebrated. That’s what culture is. He deserves it. I cannot wait to see it. Kendrick, thank you.”
The Compton rapper was announced as the performer for the big game earlier this year, and although many such as Bad Gal Riri, Fat Joe, and Fabolous are supportive of the show, the JAY-Z-led decision did receive pushback. Rappers Cam’Ron, Nicki Minaj, and fans who expected Lil Wayne to perform in his hometown of New Orleans were vocal in their disappointment.
“Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer,” JAY-Z explained of the 17-time Grammy Award winner. “His deep love for Hip-Hop and culture informs his artistic vision. He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. Kendrick’s work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come.”
Rihanna’s own halftime show at Super Bowl LVII in 2023 debuted as the most-watched halftime show of all time with 121.017 million viewers tuned in. On stage, elevated in front of the excited crowd, the “Umbrella” singer revealed she was pregnant with her and A$AP Rocky’s second child.
