Ne-Yo Talks Embracing Polyamory After Divorce: “Monogamy Is Not For Me”

Ne-Yo has finally accepted that polyamory may be the better choice for his lifestyle.

In a candid sit-down on Lemon Drop with Karleen Roy, the three-time Grammy winner opened up about his journey to self-discovery and revealed why he ditched the traditional monogamy style of dating.

“Society tells you you’re supposed to be with one person. You get married, and that’s supposed to be the end-all, be-all,” the R&B crooner said, reflecting on the pressures of being with one person. He then made it clear that his 2022 divorce from ex-wife Crystal Renay Williams is what made him step into his truth.

“I realized that I’ve not been living my truth for a very, very long time,” he admitted. “Now I’m living it, and you can tell—my skin is glowing.”

The “So Sick” singer then shared the revelation that he spent years “lying and trying to be somebody I wasn’t” for the sake of other people’s expectations. “It’s a weight lifted off my shoulders,” he said, adding that all that pretending was “complete and utter time wasted.” However, Ne-Yo made it clear that he isn’t bashing marriage or monogamy. It’s just not his thing.

“Monogamy is for you. It’s not for me,” he said. “Everything’s not for everybody.”

Ne-Yo even admitted that since opening up about his truth, his relationship with Crystal Renay has improved and the two are now calling each other “friends” again. “As long as my happy ain’t messing with anybody else’s happy, I’m in the right place,” he said. “I’ll be damned if I ever go back to that person that needed to lie for the appeasement of somebody else. I’m not that no more.”
