Ne-Yo Discusses Post-Divorce Polyamory Possibly Inspiring New Music
Following his divorce from Crystal Renay, Ne-Yo has been spotted hitting the town with multiple women — usually all together. A recent trip taken with two women also made headlines, as the R&B crooner looked blissful in the company of his flirtatious partners.
The Las Vegas native recently opened up about embracing polyamory following his marital split, acknowledging that what works for him won’t necessarily work for everyone. He also responded to the TMZ reporter asking why his music doesn’t reflect his current lifestyle, saying that it’s the first time he’s been “in a relationship like this,” so music inspired by the experience simply hasn’t hit him — yet.
“The songs come out depending on the situation and the circumstance. This is the first time that I’ve been in a relationship, situation, like this, so it’s not to say that no songs about it will come. They’ll come,” he confirmed. “I just, I don’t force it when it comes to music. It happens naturally. It happens organically.”
Ne-Yo also gave his thoughts on legalizing polyamorous marriages, saying he’s all for it, even while he doesn’t, “need the government to tell me what I can and can’t do in my personal life.” Check out the clip below.
While his take is far from traditional, Ne-Yo isn’t alone in embracing non-monogamy, as stars ranging from Omarion and Joey Bada$$ to Janelle Monáe have all publicly supported the lifestyle, with Janelle dropping poly-inspired track “Only Have Eyes 42” in 2023.
Prior to his shift in romantic endeavors, Ne-Yo was married to Crystal Renay from 2016 to 2023. Renay filed for divorce in 2022, citing years of cheating she discovered late within the marriage, as well as the singer having a child outside of their union.
