Montell Jordan Details How He Beat Prostate Cancer

Montell Jordan overcame a bout with prostate cancer this year and credited his survival to early detection as well as his faith.

The “This Is How We Do It” singer shared during a run-in with TMZ Hip-Hop, “You wanna catch it before it catches you.”

On his 56th birthday (Dec. 3), Jordan revealed that he was diagnosed with “early Stage 1” prostate cancer back in January. “Early detection helped save my life,” he wrote in the video message where he also mentioned that he’s been documenting the entire journey.

After he “researched and reviewed all options [and] prayed hard,” he opted to undergo a prostatectomy and shared his testimony one month after the surgery.

“Once [his prostate was] removed, there was more cancer found in what was removed,” Jordan confessed in the initial video. “It was more aggressive. It was undetected. It was more like Stage 2, but they got it all.”

He noted, “Jesus saved my soul. Early detection helped save my life […] I am now cancer free.”

“Getting checked every year is super, super important,” Jordan told TMZ. Two weeks post-op, he was sharing the stage with Usher at the Anaheim stop of his Past Present Future tour.

Through his own journey, he’s built a community of fellow cancer survivors and those who are still battling the disease. “I’m pastoring different people right now. Pastoring is loving people […] we’re all in the same story, but we’re in different boats and they don’t want anyone necessarily knowing what they’re navigating.”

Jordan concluded the brief conversation with this: “You can either check or you gon’ get checked. It’s gonna happen either way. You can be in control of it though.”

In an effort to complete his documentary, he asked fans to donate to the cause as a birthday gift.
