Michael B. Jordan And Miles Caton Discuss The Balance Of ‘Sinners’

Michael B. Jordan and Miles Caton‘s family ties run deep in Sinners as their characters are forced to protect themselves and each other for survival. Caton stars in the thriller as Sammy, also known as Preacher Boy—a naive yet determined musician who hopes to explore his talents outside of his father’s church. Then there’s Jordan, who leads as identical twins, Smoke and Stack, whose contrasting demeanors are powered by the common ground of love and loyalty.
“The fact that it has so many elements to it. It wasn’t just one thing, you know what I mean? People [are] calling it a horror, but it’s like, no, it’s so many different genres mixed up into one,” Jordan detailed when describing his favorite element of Sinners to VIBE ahead of the film’s national debut.

“You find yourself laughing, you know what I’m saying? You find yourself crying, you’re jumping because you’re scared,” the veteran actor adds. “And the music element to it is amazing, especially led by this guy right here,” he continued, tagging in his younger costar.
Caton added, “I’ve got to say the action, definitely the horror element, and especially the music. I was able to play a pretty significant part in that. So I’m excited for people to hear that soundtrack and just how everything is cultivated.”
The Creed franchise star elaborated on how he brought both of his characters to life under the direction of acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler. Sinners is Coogler’s first original screenplay since 2013’s Fruitvale Station, also starring Jordan. Sinners also marks the in-sync duo’s fifth director-actor collaboration.
“My director, Ryan Coogler, had these twin consultants,” shared Jordan. “I don’t even know if that’s a real thing, but he had some friends of his that are twins that he had grown up with that I would call and talk to and give me advice and just pick their brains about their experiences growing up as twins.”
He later detailed his belief in Coogler’s underlying thoughts on Sinners’ story, explaining that the filmmaker would have probably assured, “Yeah, this movie is about love. The love of music, the love of blues, the love of your culture, the love of family, the love for your freedom.
“There’s so many characters that have a love for something in this movie, and it’s all intertwined, and they all end up together, you know what I’m saying, in one place. And love is the thing that gets them through.”
Caton also discussed his thoughts on the varying thematic elements of the feature film, adding that the movie “is definitely based on love and community.”
