Lizzo Quits Music, Says She’s Tired Of “Being Dragged By Everyone”
Lizzo may be throwing in the towel when it comes to her music career. In a cryptic Instagram post from Friday (March 29), the “About Damn Time” singer opened up about being slandered in the name of clout of views and concluded the post with two words: “I quit.”
The 35-year-old expressed, “I’m getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet.” Lizzo noted that her initial goal was “to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it,” but she feels “the world” is better off without her.
The Grammy winner added, “I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.”
Lizzo then shared, “I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views. Being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look. My character being picked apart by people who don’t know me and disrespecting my name. I didn’t sign up for this s**t. I quit [peace sign emoji].”
Holly Robinson Peete, Kid Fury, and singer Aliah Sheffield were among those rallying behind Lizzo and offered words of encouragement. Peete commented, “Get you a Beyoncé shut off switch, Sis! Find tools and practices to shut out the noise—it’s possible! All great artists need one especially in this day and age where everyone’s opinions are platformed and amplified. Do not quit!!”
Kid Fury chimed in, “You are so necessary, talented and important. You also deserve peace. Whatever makes you happy, I support.”
Sheffield used Lizzo’s own lyrics to drive her point home, writing, “‘In case nobody told you today/ You’re special/ In case nobody made you believe, you’re special.’ Your own words. Sometimes we need to be our own cheerleaders, and if none of these comments help, I hope your own words will.”
Since the announcement of her potential retirement, Lizzo has returned to posting only about her brand, YITTY and its newest collections. However, just a few weeks ago, the “Special” artist teased that her new music was “some of the best music” and spoke on how excited she was for her fans to hear it.
“I’m writing some of the best music and I’m so excited for y’all to hear. I’m almost ready to be a normal human again… to be outside.. to love and trust people.. to try and make new friends… to go on live … to sing and talk about my pain and joy… just give me a lil more time. Thank u for the patience and to the ones who unfollowed thank u too cus now I know where we stand,” said Lizzo.
Meanwhile as of February 2024, her sexual harassment case is headed towards a trial, Billboard reports, after a judge refused to dismiss it—per her request. A start date has not been confirmed.
