Killer Mike Dubs Doechii “The Leader In Rap Right Now”

Doechii has received high praise from Killer Mike during a special Grammy Museum event on Wednesday (Dec. 18), spotlighting her Grammy-nominated album Alligator Bites Never Heal.

As the “What It Is” star has had a groundbreaking year, Mike crowned Doechii “the leader in rap right now” before an entire audience. The event, which celebrated Doechii’s nominations, featured a candid conversation between the TDE star and the Atlanta icon where they discussed her accolades and showered her with praise.

“You truly are an artist. You’re not a rapper aspiring to be,” he said. “You’ve been an artist. You choose rap to tell a story but visually, [the cover of Alligator Bites Never Heal] is striking. It is absolutely a testimony to me that the south has produced an artist like you.”

He added, “There are many other artists out of Florida, but you are the tip of the spear right now. I think you are the leader in rap right now.”

Mike’s endorsement follows Kendrick Lamar’s, who in October called Doechii “the hardest” in Hip-Hop.

Sharing the artwork for Alligator Bites Never Heal, he wrote: “the hardest out [alligator emoji].” In response, Doechii took to her own Instagram, writing: “Thank you Dot. You the greatest,” later adding, “Getting your flowers while you can still smell them >>>.”

Doechii reflected on all of her nods during a recent interview with HipHopDX’s where she described the moment as both surreal and affirming. “I’m having déjà vu—it feels like I’ve been here before,” she said. “I feel like I’ve received this before. So I feel aligned.”
