Kiki Shepard, Longtime ‘Showtime At The Apollo’ Co-Host, Dead At 74

Kiki Shepard, legendary co-host of the iconic variety program Showtime at the Apollo, has died at the age of 74.

According to TMZ, Shepard passed away on Monday (March 16) in Los Angeles from a massive heart attack, marking the end of a long and influential presence in television, theater, and film.

Born in 1951 in Tyler, Texas, as Chiquita Renee Shepard, she built a career that began on the stage and evolved into national television prominence.

Shepard performed in major Broadway productions, including Bubbling Brown Sugar, Comin’ Uptown, Reggae, Your Arms Too Short to Box With God, and Porgy and Bess.

She also appeared in the star-studded 1978 film The Wiz, further establishing her versatility as a performer early in her career.

Shepard joined Showtime at the Apollo upon the show’s debut in 1987, serving as an original co-host, a role she held until her departure in 2002.

Over the course of her tenure, she appeared in 96 episodes, ultimately becoming the “face” of the show during its most influential years.

In addition to her work on Showtime at the Apollo, Shepard appeared in numerous television series, including A Different World, Baywatch, Baywatch Nights, NYPD Blue, Everybody Hates Chris, and Grey’s Anatomy, demonstrating a steady presence across decades of television.

Beyond acting and hosting, Shepard founded the K.I.S. Foundation in the mid-2000s to raise awareness about sickle cell disease.

In March 2026, a week prior to her passing, Shepard was honored at an International Women’s Day Gospel Brunch in Los Angeles, recognizing her contributions both on and off the screen.
