“You see it’s progressing,” the New York native said, noting the country’s momentum and modern conveniences like Amazon, Uber, and Uber Eats that make daily life easier. “There’s just a lot of stuff happening all the time so it just makes it livable.”

While admitting she’s still in the process of securing health insurance, Kelis also applauded Kenya’s medical system and its people. “The people here are really friendly, they’re just good people,” the singer shared, describing the warmth and hospitality that welcomed her family.

Still, the GRAMMY-nominated artist didn’t shy away from honesty about the challenges of life in rural Kenya. From rough terrain and periodic flooding caused by poor drainage to limited waste management, she admitted there are hurdles.

“If you want to live here like an American, it’s definitely going to cost you triple the price,” Kelis cautioned, emphasizing the higher costs of maintaining a Western lifestyle abroad.

Despite the inconveniences, Kelis remains deeply enamored with her new surroundings, calling Kenya “one of the best countries on the continent.”

Alongside her 16-year-old son Knight—whom she shares with rapper Nas—and her and late husband Mike Mora’s children, Shepherd, 9, and Galilee, 5, Kelis continues to cultivate a fulfilling new life rooted in simplicity, sustainability, and self-discovery.
