Denzel Washington Says He Doesn’t Care About Winning Oscars, And Here’s Why

Denzel Washington doesn’t care about the Oscars and similar accolades because that wasn’t why he became an actor.
During a recent interview with Jake’s Takes, the veteran actor — and two-time Oscar winner — admitted, “I don’t do it for Oscars.”
Washington doubled down on the sentiment, adding, “I don’t care about that kind of stuff. I’ve been at this a long time, and there’s time when I won and shouldn’t have won and then didn’t win and should’ve won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward.”

The 70-year-old confessed that he’s “not that interested in Oscars,” despite often being asked by people on the location of his Oscars.
“People ask me, ‘Where do I keep it?’ Well, next to the other one. I’m not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, [Oscars] aren’t going to do me a bit of good,” he said matter-of-factly, noting that those Oscars won”t help get him into heaven.
Washington quipped, “[As] long as [God] says, ‘Now, get on up here,’ I’m alright.”

The Highest 2 Lowest star won two Academy Awards throughout his career. His first came in 1997 for Best Supporting Actor in Glory. The second came in 2001 for Best Leading Actor in Training Day. Overall, he’s been nominated 10 times.
Despite being notably snubbed for an 11th Oscar nomination for his exemplary role in Gladiator II, Washington was unbothered. He told The New York Times, “Listen, I’ve been around too long. I’m getting wiser, working on talking less and learning to understand more — and that’s exciting.”
