Cam’ron Rocks O.J. Simpson Helmet, Jersey After Stephen A. Smith Slams BET Awards Inclusion
Cam’ron may have subtly responded to Stephen A. Smith‘s criticism of the 2024 BET Awards for including O.J. Simpson in its in memoriam segment.
Days after Smith took to his eponymous podcast to call out the network for the move, Cam shared footage of himself walking through a casino in Simpson’s Buffalo Bills uniform, complete with “Simpson #32” scrawled across the back.
“OJ was here!!!! Happy INDEPENDENCE DAY! This ain’t really Our holiday.. But it Feels good not to have to answer to nobody,” the Harlem rapper captioned the Instagram clip. Check it out below.
The move is believed to be the Purple Haze artist’s way of showing his support of Simpson being recognized, as opposed to Smith’s take that it was a questionable move on BET’s part.
“You may recall O.J. Simpson died this past April after a battle with cancer. Yes, he is known for being a Hall of Famer on the football field out of USC, and ultimately with the Buffalo Bills in his NFL career, but he was also accused of double murder,” Smith argued before mentioning Cam and his It Is What It Is co-host, Ma$e’s, relationship with Simpson — another reason many believe Cam is subtly responding to Smith’s take.
“In the eyes of most people, regardless of an acquittal, O.J. Simpson is a double-murderer. He was ostracized and considered a pariah by the vast majority of American citizens,” he continued. “I love Ma$e and I love Cam’ron, and I know what respect they have for O.J., I’m not casting any aspersions on anybody like that. They have their relationship with them and that’s their business, more power to them.”
After his April passing, It Is What It Is remembered Simpson as a frequent guest-host with stories of his interactions with Cam and Ma$e, as well as a heartfelt social media post honoring “Uncle O.”
“1st OF ALL WE WANT TO SEND OUR HEART FELT CONDOLENCES OUT TO THE FAMILY OF #OJSIMPSON, 2nd OF ALL WE JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU ‘UNCLE O’ FOR GRACING US WITH YOUR PRESENCE, YOU WERE DEFINITELY ONE OF A KIND, YOU BECAME ‘UNCLE O’ TO US CAUSE IT WAS LIKE HAVING A REAL UNCLE AROUND,” read a statement from the sports podcast’s Instagram page. “YOU WERE FUNNY & VERY DOWN TO EARTH… WHEN WE SIGNED OUR DEAL THE FIRST CO-HOST WE THOUGHT ABOUT HAVING WAS ‘UNCLE O’ WE SAID OH WE GONE BREAK THE INTERNET WITH #OJ & THAT WE DID, YOU HELPED MAKE OUR SHOW 10x’s BETTER & EVERYONE LOVED YOU… WE WILL CHERISH THESE LAST MEMORIES WE WERE ABLE TO SHARE WITH YOU… YOU WILL FOREVER BE APART OF THE #ITISWHATITISTALK FAMILY ?️ WE LOVE YOU ‘UNCLE O.’
