A$AP Rocky Doesn’t Believe In “Weird” Absent Black Fathers Stereotype

A$AP Rocky is finding himself in hot water once again after comments about Black fathers and Black women have fans heated.

The Harlem-bred rapper spoke with BuzzFeed’s Cocoa Butter at the 2025 Met Gala to give advice to Black fathers about raising Black children.

“I think that it’s like a known thing that people don’t really talk about which is Black fathers [are] always present. Mines was present. All my friends’ [dads] was present. There was this weird stereotype or just this weird stigma about Black men kinda leaving mothers to be single Black mothers and stuff like that. I would say that was all facade. It was all a lie,” he declared before addressing other men directly.

Rocky continued his sentiment by stating, “Continue being great to your kids. Love them. Unconditionally. No matter what and on top of that, get your dad swag right because I’m in my bag.”

Fans and critics alike took the comments reacting to Rocky’s suggestion. “Just because that was not your story does not mean it was not true,” one user wrote. Another replied, “I’m not sure of the stats but I think there are more active fathers than deadbeats.”

However, this isn’t the seemingly worst thing he’s said recently. In a separate video from Met Monday, Rocky was asked what he loves most about Black women. To which he quipped, “S**t. I love my Black woman. You about to get me in trouble. You got me f**ked up.”

Because of past statements about how women of a darker complexion shouldn’t wear red lipstick and such, many felt his colorist past was resurfacing.

“In other words ‘I don’t [love Black women]. I love Rihanna who happens to be black,” one person commented. Someone else compared the emcee to Stack, Michael B. Jordan’s fictional character from Sinners.

“He doesn’t love black women, he loves Rihanna- who happens to be a black woman & lighter skin. He was never a champion for black women. He definitely prefers a certain type of woman and it’s not dark skin women. Definitely giving me stack vibez lol,” they responded.

Others praised Rocky’s answer. With someone else writing, “ASAP got fresh braids, got our girl pregnant again and walking around with that koolaid smile of his… I LOVE US!!”

Rih and Rocky announced they were expecting their third child— gender unknown— earlier that evening.
