Mariah The Scientist Clarifies Young Thug Red Carpet Situation From BET Awards ’25

Mariah The Scientist and Young Thug went viral earlier this year after videos of them arriving at the BET Awards had fans talking. The songstress has now clarified the situation and explained the context behind what was actually happening from her perspective.

Videos from the June award show sparked concern amongst fans as they showed Thugger seemingly “rushing” and “dragging” Mariah by her hand around the red carpet. At one point, the rapper even flipped someone off and barked, “We not doin that, c’mon” before pulling his lady away.

On Monday (Aug. 11), Mariah sat down with Nessa on Hot 97 and was asked about the BET Awards situation. Beginning by acknowledging the expected “commotion” at these big events, she said she was relatively on time, but wound up falling behind schedule because of the long lines. An employee told the couple to circle around the entire venue in order to reach the photo-op portion, but because Young Thug had a mask on, other employees were unaware that it was him. Therefore, they were met with resistance from other employees, which caused frustration for Thug.

The pair was also on a tight schedule because Mariah was slated as one of the presenters for the evening.

“He has a mask on so no one is acknowledging at first glance that it’s him. So they’re telling us, ‘It’s closed, you’re wasting your time to come and try to take pictures’ even though the upper heads have told us to go that way,” she explained. “I guess maybe he didn’t like how they addressed it. If you really rewatch the video, I’m trying to pull him to take a picture. I’m thinking, ‘I look so good right now, we gotta photograph this.’ But [he said], ‘Just let ’em be. It’s fine. They gon’ see it.’ Plus, he’s already done this.”

After reiterating how the miscommunication from employees made things confusing, the “Spread Thin” singer took accountability for how she may have contributed to how things played out. “Maybe I could have been earlier and we wouldn’t have had to have done any of that,” she reflected. Elsewhere in the conversation, Mariah spoke about her forthcoming album, Hearts Sold Separately, which she has dubbed as her take on the modern “war on love.” The project is set to make landfall on Aug. 22, and is led by her viral single, “Burning Blue.” She also gifted fans with “Is It a Crime” featuring Kali Uchis on July 31.
