Cory Hardrict Defends Tyler Perry And Starring In ‘Divorce In The Black’ After Negative Reviews

Cory Hardrict has brushed off critical reviews regarding his first Tyler Perry film, Divorce In The Black.

The actor, who ironically is newly-divorced, defended the viral Amazon Prime film and its creator — whom has dealt with much backlash for having similar storylines and unbelievable plot twists in his films.

Hardrict, who stars in the film alongside Meagan Good, was recently stopped by TMZ where he praised the movie, despite it receiving a rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. While speaking with the platform, Hardrict gushed about the “number one movie in the world” and also shouted out Perry for “taking care of his actors.”

“Yeah, listen, I’m in Mr. Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black. It’s the number one movie in the world. I’m excited, man,” he said. “Number one movie in the world right now! Listen, I’m excited.”

As the 44-year-old’s sentiments may have been exaggerated, Divorce In The Black isn’t even top five at the moment — although it is currently No. 1 on Prime Video.

According to Box Office, the No. 1 movie in the world currently is Despicable Me 4. Speaking of the film’s rating amongst critics, Hardrict made it clear that he hasn’t been keeping up with what people are saying, but he loves that people are actually watching it.

“I don’t know nothing about it. I didn’t see that,” he said of the low score. “I mean, the people love the movie and we do it for the people–that’s who I do it for. If the culture’s rocking with it, it’s all love. So it’s fine. But as long as the people see it, my neighborhood see it, South Side, Chicago, L.A. see it, everybody see it, then I’m happy, it’s all love.”

The Chi actor also spoke highly of Perry, whom he says he’s currently working with on another undisclosed film. “Shoutout Mr. Perry, I love Mr. Perry, though. That’s my guy. He takes care of his actors, it’s a loving set and we’re gonna do it again,” he expressed.

One of the most talked about critical reviews of Divorce In The Black came from comedian and TV host, Loni Love. In a X post, Loni suggested that Perry hire Black writers and directors to “improve” his work and help him with his movies.

“He could improve the movies & make them award worthy if he would stop trying to save money by doing the writing and directing himself,” she said.
