The 6 Most Unhinged Moments From Tyler Perry’s ‘Divorce In The Black’
Tyler Perry‘s latest film might be his most unhinged cinematic take to-date.
Released on July 11 via Prime Video, Divorce In The Black stars Meagan Good and Cory Hardrict as Ava and Dallas, an estranged couple whose divorce sends him into a downward spiral. Ava gets driven back into the arms of her first love while Dallas’ warped mind attempts to piece together his life while destroying that of his ex wife.
The film also stars Debbi Morgan and Richard Lawson as Ava’s parents, Taylor Polidore as Ava’s best friend Rona, Shannon Wallace as Rona’s husband, and Joseph Lee Anderson as Ava’s first love Benji.
Despite it being ranked the No. 1 must-watch on Prime Video, the film scored a rare 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes with critics labeling it a “complete disaster.”
We wouldn’t say it was that bad, though. Acrimony still exists, even though Rotten Tomatoes ranked A Madea Family Funeral, Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, A Fall From Grace, and Mea Culpa lower on the critical scale. Divorce In The Black ranked 59% among audiences — and so did Acrimony back in 2018.
Throughout the film, most of the demented occurrences come from Dallas and his family, but Ava does get her witty zingers in and fights back to keep her life in tact. There were several laughable offenses and some that were down right unbelievable, but we did the grunt work to save yourself the potential headache of watching it.

The Opening Funeral Scene

It started off with a funeral scene “celebrating” the life of Hardrict’s older brother who was killed while trying to rob an elderly woman. When Ava’s father accused his mother, Linda, of not raising her boys right—considering they were the source of havoc in their small town—she demanded that her dead son’s body be removed from the casket and be carried out for a private burial.
Yes, you read that right.
Ava’s parents were paying for the funeral and casket and Linda refused to accept their handouts—even the clothes she borrowed for the ceremony. So as her other sons carried out their brother’s lifeless body, she stripped down to her undergarments and left.

Divorce For Dinner?

“Can’t remember the last time we had a nice night […] Jim, Black women ain’t s**t,” he barked. “I want a divorce. We don’t no kids so this should be easy. You can keep the house because your parents gave us the down payment and I don’t wanna hear their motherf**kin’ mouths! I’m not payin’ any alimony! […] Sign the damn papers, Ava!”
Looking distraught and confused, Ava just sat back in disbelief before Dallas left the restaurant.

“Do you wanna lose yo’ job, b***h?”
Image Credit: Amazon Prime Video / courtesy Everett Collection After Ava starts to get her groove back, Dallas gets tipped off about her rekindled romance with Benji by his brothers. So, in a crazed rage, he pops up at her job demanding that she finalizes their divorce the following day.
When her best friend, Rona, attempts to interject to deescalate the situation—while Ava is in the middle of a client meeting—he delivers the funniest line of the entire film, “Do you wanna lose yo’ job, b***?” To which Rona replies, “N***a, I don’t give a f**k about this job!”
It sounded like something straight out of a Kevin Hart stand-up special.

A Literal Drag
Image Credit: Amazon Prime Video / courtesy Everett Collection After a passionate night with Benji following her divorce party, Ava wakes up to find Dallas in her kitchen enjoying a bowl of cereal. Naturally infuriated and confused, she questioned how he got in because she changed the locks.
“I ain’t been here but 20 minutes, ain’t you glad to see me?” Dallas quipped back. Keep in mind that when he asked for the divorce, he gave her the house. Now, he’s saying that he’d forgive her relationship with Benji and was willing to take her back. Yet, Ava wasn’t having it—especially considering Benji was sleeping peacefully upstairs while all of this was going on.
“I’ll be damned if I ever beg a n***a to stay with me,” she fired back. “Well, since you woke up the b***h in me, get the f**k out my house.” A fight ensued between the three of them and ultimately, Ava dragged him down the stairs and out of the house. Benji finally helped her out to get Dallas back in his truck and as she slammed the door, the window cracked. This was the part that was very unbelievable, but we’re gonna let her have this win.

Attempted Murder?

This moment was followed by Dallas threatening Ava’s mother in the grocery store and her father getting jumped by him and his brothers while his mother egged them on.

Getting Her Lick Back

Considering he violated the restraining order she had in place, she needed hard evidence for authorities to take her claims against him seriously.
They get into a fight and she shoots him dead. “Shoot me, b***h,” he states before the fatal shot. The next scene shows Ava and her loved ones helping her father as he gets discharged and are confronted by Dallas’ family.
“You think this is over? You killed my boy,” the matriarch yells. Ava fires back, “For your sake, it better be. Be careful pushing good people too far. It’s over. Let it be over.”
That is how the film ends.
Divorce In The Black is the one of a four-film deal between Perry and Prime Video. Let’s just hope whatever follows has a better outcome among fans and critics alike.
