Common Reveals Dennis Graham Helped Him Squash Beef With Drake
Rappers and their egos often make it difficult to settle feuds on their own, requiring the need of an objective third party to be a helping hand. Common recently revealed how Dennis Graham helped him squash the beef with his son, Drake.
The Chicago rapper joined Drink Champs this past weekend alongside Pete Rock as part of the rollout for their forthcoming joint album The Auditorium Vol. 1. At one point, the Toronto superstar came up in conversation and the “Go!” artist revealed where and how they decided to let bygones be bygones.
“I eventually saw Drake face to face,” he said, describing them running into one another at the 2012 Grammys. “It was at a point where I was like, ‘Wassup?’ And we had little words. And then his father was there and was like, ‘Y’all need to squash this.’ And I was like, ‘Man, this an elder talking to me. This this man’s father. Let me chill out.’” The 6 God echoed his sentiment, the two owned up to their subliminal disses, accepted that they said all they needed to, and resolved their issues. Watch below.
Common and Drake’s issues began when the latter began dating his ex, Serena Williams, and believed that he was receiving subliminal disses. “I felt like Drake was sending me a couple of shots, subliminals,” he said. “I don’t know what motivated him to send me some shots, but I think what for sure had me, if I’m just being real, like you know, we mess with one of the same girls. You know wars happen over women. That’s just what it is.”
The 52-year-old rapper claimed that he would never diss someone dating a person he had previously dated, but if they decide to do it to him, he would be willing to engage. He stayed true to that when he sent shots at Drizzy on his 2011 record “Sweet,” calling Drake out for singing on his songs. Common confirmed that he was dissing the five-time Grammy winner during an interview on Sway In The Morning that same year.
The Degrassi star followed up with his own disses on “Stay Schemin” alongside Rick Ross and French Montana. “It bothers me when the gods get to actin’ like the broads/ Guess every team doesn’t come complete with ni**as like ours/ That’s why I see no need to compete with ni**as like y’all/ I just ask that when you see me you speak up, ni**a, that’s all/ Don’t be duckin’ like you never wanted nothin’,” he rapped.
Common recently stood up for Drake when Mos Def called his music “pop” that one would hear at Target, which spawned an entire discussion about the “God’s Plan” artist’s status in Hip-Hop. “To me, I think Drake comes from Hip Hop,” he said. “When I first heard him rhyming, I was like, ‘Yo, this dude rhyming.’ And if he goes out and makes songs that are popular, then that’s what it is. He’s still an MC. The dude is an incredible songwriter, he’s an incredible artist.”
