Jeezy Takes His “Day Ones” On A Musical Journey With ‘Tiny Desk’ Performance
Jeezy takes his career from the “Bottom of the Map” to NPR’s Tiny Desk in the latest episode of the series. The motivational trap musician shared pride in his experience through personal storytelling and his descriptive lyrics during the intimate showcase.
“If you been riding with me since day one. I’ma take you on a journey,” shared the rapper before the performance began. “If you stick with your dreams and stay about your business, you can get anywhere. Y’all ready?”
The 46-year-old began with the track “Standing Ovation” from his 2005 debut album Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101. Rapping the first verse, the Atlanta representative invited the audience to join in reciting “Now I’m ya favorite trapper’s favorite trapper,” encouraging them to raise the volume on the declarative hook.
“I know this is Tiny Desk but I like a collaborative effort…We gon’ do this together.”
The 20-minute performance continued to share a range of the Grammy-nominated rapper’s catalog. The full set list is as follows: “Standing Ovation,” “Air Forces,” “Bottom Of The Map,” “And Then What,” “Go Crazy,” and “Everythang.”
On the small stage, Jeezy is joined by music director D. Hodge on bass, CJ Thompson on drums, Joe Harley on keys, Ashley Pointer and Dr. Amyr Joyner on violin, Leila-Michelle Walker on viola and Johnny Walker on cello.
“I was able to connect with my people and my culture because we spoke the same language,” he explained before playing “Go Crazy.” “I wanted to inspire and give people the blueprint, people who wanted more for themselves.”
